MORE ABOUT GROUND 23

Where Students Come First

At the heart of everything that we do is our passion for bettering the lives of others . We believe that through Brazillian Jiu Jitsu individuals are able to improve their lives by getting healthier physically, relieving stress mentally, boosting self confidence, and just having a safe and open community of like minded individuals.

Our company name was created to reflect our belief that BJJ should be available to everyone and our drive to share the benefits that BJJ brings to people's lives. To do this all we need is Ground 23. The Ground (and don't worry we have mats too) represents all that we need for a location and the 23 represents the full set of unique chromosome pairs that makes up every individual i.e you (yes our nerd side coming out a bit). Ground 23 offers students the ability to learn in convenient locations that suit their needs. Our set-up is flexible allowing us to customize the location of the training directly to where it is most convenient for students while still ensuring safety and a fun learning environment for both adults and children. The skilled team members are here to help students achieve their goals. So if you are ready to reach your potential or are looking to bring bjj to your community drop us an email and join Ground23 BJJ today.

What is BJJ?

BJJ otherwise known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a Brazilian martial art with its origins in Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Unlike the majority of martial arts BJJ focuses on what happens when the fight gets on the ground instead of on the feet. Helio Gracie the founder of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu designed it to allow a smaller and weaker opponent to be able to subdue a larger opponent by using leverage and technical knowledge instead of strength. The foundation of BJJ which started with the Gracie's was heavily centered around self-defense and being able to protect yourself. This is especially important as many fights or confrontations end up on the ground so being comfortable and knowing how to defend yourself from this position is key.

The sport also known as the gentle art since it does not involve kicking or punching; works on subduing an opponent through joint locks or chokes that allow the user to control their opponent without physical harm

Due to the nature of the sport it is great at teaching discipline, self-control, building confidence and improving problem solving skills. As students learn more and more techniques the sport side of BJJ evolves more into a game of human chess with attacks and counters for every move. So it not only keeps your body active but also helps sharpen your mind.
